ABOUT CONFERENCE

The Conference “Antiquity in Croatian Culture, Art, and Literature in the ‘Long’ Eighteenth Century” is the first interdisciplinary scientific conference organized by the Research Group for the Study of the 18th Century in Croatian Lands (IGOS). The goal of the conference is to present various aspects of the presence and transformation of antiquity in Croatian culture, art, and literature during the ‘long’ 18th century.

Over the course of three days, 43 participants from 30 institutions in Croatia and abroad will present their papers. The conference will discuss various topics, including the use of the Latin language and the reception of ancient authors, the use of antiquity in culture and politics, the discovery of antiquity on the Adriatic and the Croatian continent, and the presence of antiquity in education, law, sculpture, and painting.

ABOUT IGOS AND THE CONFERENCE

The Research Group for the Study of the Eighteenth Century in Croatian Lands, or simply "IGOS Group," represents a research team dedicated to studying the 'Long' Eighteenth Century in Croatian lands. The initiators are Dr Teodora Shek Brnardić from the Croatian Institute of History and Dr Dubravka Botica, full professor at the Department of Art History, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb.

The work of the group members is interdisciplinary, focusing on researching various aspects of the cultural, artistic, literary, and social history of that period. The group brings together researchers and experts from different institutions with the aim of contributing to the scientific understanding and interpretation of events and phenomena during the eighteenth century in the context of Croatian lands.

As part of the group, an annual bulletin is published, featuring the latest bibliography of members on topics related to the 'Long' Eighteenth Century. Currently, the group has around 70 members. Approximately every two months, live meetings are held where members present their recent research. You can become a member by sending an email to the address igos.18.stoljece@gmail.com
